Don't Miss: Hummingbird Festival at Starved Rock August 21 from 11am-4pm


Please join Starved Rock Audubon for our annual Hummingbird Festival at Starved Rock State Park located at Starved Rock Visitor Center. There will be nature activities for the whole family as well plenty of hummingbirds for easy viewing.
Vern Kleen, ornithologist and retired IDNR employee will be also on hand.

Highlights Include:

  • Hummingbird talk/presentation by Vern from 11am-12pm
  • Banding of live hummingbirds from 1pm-4pm

Before and After


This spring I discovered a finch nest in a fern on my front porch. Last week, I noticed that two of the babies hatched and flew out of the nest. Above is a picture of the eggs in the nest and the fledglings. I was careful not to watch them too closely, but I did keep an eye on them as they grew up.

Starved Rock Audubon members joined Illinois Audubon and Will County Audubon members for an exciting birding opportunity on Saturday, May 28. Birders from across the state explored the Midewin Tall Grass Prairie near Wilmington, Illinois.

Don't Miss Wildflower Weekend at Starved Rock

April 30 & May 1, 2011 is the Annual Wildflower Pilgrimage at Starved Rock State Park. 

Enjoy the great variety of spring wildflowers at Starved Rock. Guided hikes leave from the Visitor's Center at 9:00am and 1:00pm. You can visit the Starved Rock Foundation's website for more information. Their website is: www.starvedrockfoundation.org

Greetings fellow birders,
I am pleased to announce the creation of this blog. I hope that it will be useful for community members to connect and share information about the flora and fauna of the Starved Rock area. I created this blog and the new Starved Rock Audubon website for a graduate technology class I am taking.
Please feel free to post sightings of birds in the area or post a picture, if you need help identifying a bird you have seen. If you post a sighting for other members visit in person, please be sure to post an exact location or provide directions to the location. For security reasons, please do not post directions to your home or to private property.
